Marine Breeding Initiative

In the last year I have gotten very interested in breeding and raising saltwater fish.  I was searching for a good website that was dedicated to marine fish breeding.  I got some website recommendations from other experienced saltwater fish breeders and instantly became hooked to the Marine Breeding Initiative website and forum.  The entire website is broken down into two sections.  The first are is a report area where you can earn points and document milestones such as spawning, hatching and settlement of the saltwater fish larvae.  You can search through 100's of reports on how certain species were raised...

Onyx Percula Clownfish Larvae

My Onyx Percula clownfish spawned recently and I hatched the eggs in a half full 10 gallon aquarium.  I have been having some problems with the clownfish larvae dieing in the first 8 hours after hatch.  I usually take the water out of the brood stock tank and use that for hatching the larvae in the larvae tank.  This time I used 50% newly made saltwater and 50% water from the brood stock system.  For this batch I ended up with 60-70% surviving the night and after 5 days I have about 50 larvae left getting close to metamorphosis.  This...

Onyx Percula Clownfish Spawning

Two nights ago I finally had the opportunity to watch my Onyx Percula Clownfish spawn.  This pair is around 5-6 years old.  The pair is the offspring of Rod's Onyx clownfish.  The spawning started around 7pm cst and lasted a little over an hour.  A nest of 150-200 eggs were laid on a hammer coral.  They typically spawn every two weeks.  The eggs hatch 8 days after they are laid around 2 hours after the lights are shut off.  The pair of Onyx Percula Clownfish are in a 30 gallon cube tank that is attached to my main 240 reef...

Aquarium Macro Photography

One thing I am very interested in is photography.  It started with wanting to learn how to take photos of my aquarium and its inhabitants.  Over time I have gradually gotten better at taking photographs and photography has become a secondary hobby for me.  After seeing lots of aquarium photographs I have found macrophotography to be interesting.  Macrophotography is just taking photos very close to the object.  In the aquarium I am intrigued by the textures and colors of corals. In order to take this types of photos it helps to have a Digital SLR camera or a point and...
